Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League with a convincing 2-0 win over West Ham at the Emirates on Saturday afternoon.

Declan Rice opened the scoring in the first half to send the Gunners into the break with a 1-0 lead, before Bukayo Saka doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the second half to seal a routine win over their London rivals.

As it happened

Mikel Arteta’s side started strongly and created a flurry of chances to take the lead, with Eberechi Eze coming close from close range but unable to keep his effort under the bar.

West Ham struggled to cope with the Gunners’ pressure, and in the 38th minute, Declan Rice broke the deadlock against his former club. The midfielder was quickest to react to a deflected shot from Eze and made no mistake in putting Arsenal ahead going into half-time.

The hosts continued their dominance after the restart and were awarded a penalty in the 66th minute when Jurrien Timber was brought down inside the box. There was some uncertainty over who would take it between Viktor Gyökeres and Saka, but the latter stepped up and calmly converted to double the advantage.

Nuno Espírito Santo’s side searched for a way back into the match but struggled to create any clear-cut chances against a well-organised Arsenal backline.

The North Londoners managed the closing stages effectively to secure all three points and move to the top of the Premier League table, though Liverpool still have the chance to respond when they face Chelsea later this evening.

Both sides now head into the international break, but there was a concern for Arsenal as captain Martin Ødegaard was forced off for the third consecutive home match, giving Arteta a potential injury worry to contend with.
