Arsenal and Bayern Munich showed interest in Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku during the winter transfer window and will return for the Frenchman this summer, according to RMC Sport.
Nkunku has grown disillusioned with Chelsea after a torrid time at the club and is looking for the exit door. He reportedly wants a club with guaranteed UEFA Champions League football.
Bayern came forward for his signature in January but could not agree a deal with the Blues for the former RB Leipzig man.
Bayern Sporting director Max Eberl knows him from their time together at Die Roten Bullen.
Nkunku can plug several holes in the Bayern attack, especially at centre-forward, where Bayern do not have a back-up for Harry Kane. The 27-year-old excelled in a false nine role in the Bundesliga.
However, Arsenal are also in the race for his signature. Manager Mikel Arteta seems hell-bent on rescuing Chelsea duds and might consider using him in different attacking positions.
Nkunku was performing well in the Bundesliga before landing at the talent graveyard that is Stamford Bridge. Arteta will back himself to unlock that decisive player.
The sheer audacity of Nkunku to seek an exit after what can only be described as a ghost spell at Chelsea is laughable.
Chelsea shelled out around £52 million for a player who’s done little more than jog around the pitch and score a handful of goals in a third-tier European competition.
His work rate is abysmal, his application is near non-existent, and his body language reeks of disinterest.
Nkunku was the marquee signing, hailed as the creative spark, the Nicolas Jackson upgrade, but he has delivered next to nothing.
Instead of knuckling down and fighting, Nkunku wants to bail for Champions League football he did not help earn.
Chelsea have many problems, and Nkunku is one of them. Letting him go might be a mercy.
However, Arsenal and Bayern should not be surprised when he vanishes when it matters most.
