Spaniard nodded home Arsenal’s equaliser in chaotic clash
Mikel Merino deemed Moises Caicedo’s challenge on him as “horrible” after the Chelsea midfielder was sent off during the Blues’ 1-1 draw with Arsenal.
It was a fiery encounter at Stamford Bridge, with cards aplenty, and while Chelsea were the ones to go down to 10 men, it will be Arsenal that face a fine after receiving six cautions throughout the match.
But it was one moment of madness from Caicedo, who steamed into a tackle on Merino with a straight leg and his studs raised, with the replay showing referee Anthony Taylor that he ought to upgrade the initial yellow card he had brandished.
The Ecuadorian was given his marching orders, and Enzo Maresca’s side were a man light before the interval.
Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, Merino reflected on the incident.
"I felt my ankle go all the way but luckily I have very mobile ankles and body,” the Spaniard explained.
“I knew it was a horrible challenge and it was going to be a red card.”
As to why he thought those kinds of challenges had been made all game, the midfielder said: "This is the Premier League. It's very strong and it's why you see so many transitions. If you win a duel, then you can attack the box."
Merino also said that he had not spoken to Caicedo about the challenge since.
The strong challenge from the Chelsea midfielder left Merino needing treatment in the first half, but he seemed unscathed in the second when he leapt highest to nod home Bukayo Saka’s cross to equalise on 59 minutes.
Arsenal could not muster a winner, but their lead at the top of the Premier League extends to five points.
