Arsenal have reportedly reignited interest in Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, who faces an uncertain future at St James’ Park.
The Gunners previously explored a deal for Tonali in January following a long-term injury to Mikel Merino.
Preliminary discussions have now resumed between the two clubs to outline the financial parameters of a potential summer move.
The sporting rationale behind Arsenal’s pursuit is clear. Throughout a demanding campaign, they relied heavily on Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi.
Signing a player of Tonali’s profile – a dynamic, box-to-box midfielder with elite technical quality – would provide crucial rotation and ease the physical burden on Rice.
A deal will not be straightforward. Newcastle have missed out on Champions League qualification, which has reportedly triggered a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ allowing Tonali to seek an exit.
However, the Magpies will not let their prized asset leave cheaply and are expected to demand a premium fee, with figures between £70m and £86m (€100m) being quoted.
Arsenal could face stiff competition from elsewhere. Manchester United have also identified Tonali as a primary target to spearhead their midfield rebuild.
Signing Tonali, who is ‘better than Rice, would send a powerful statement to the rest of Europe if Arsenal secure his services.
Adding his tactical versatility to an already elite spine of Rice, Zubimendi, and Martin Odegaard would give Arsenal the depth needed to compete for more silverware.
