Ashley Cole has recently stepped into management, taking over at Serie B club Cesena after years of coaching.

He’s been speaking about what it takes to be a top manager, in the light of Xabi Alonso’s appointment at Chelsea.

Cole on Alonso needing results to buy time

“The best managers are ones that adapt, because you can never have a team that suits you in every club or have the time to build one,” Cole said.

“So, you have to adapt first, get results, and buy yourself time to build a team that you can call yours.”

That’s the important part, really. We’ve seen a number of managers come to Chelsea over the years with a grand project to put in place. But if you don’t get the wins, you won’t get the time to do it. There’s no way around that.

So no matter what your end goal is, your short term objective is to get the results which buys you the time and the trust to aim bigger. Let’s hope Alonso knows that.
