The Blues confirmed the appointment of Alonso earlier this month, with the 44-year-signing a four year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso officially begins work on July 1st, and faces a critical summer of recruitment, following a disastrous tenth placed finish in the Premier League.

Ashley Cole unsure on Xabi Alonso tactics

The appointment of Alonso is seen a real coup for Chelsea, with the players reportedly excited to work under the Spaniard.

Reece James has described Alonso as an amazing manager, whilst Trevoh Chalobah has expressed his excitement at working under the former Real Madrid boss.

John Terry has given his seal of approval, and given what Alonso has achieved as both a player and manger he’ll instantly command the respect of the dressing room.

The arrival of Alonso could see Chelsea switch to a back three, the system he used so brilliantly at Bayer Leverkusen, and Cole was asked if he felt it would work with the Blues.

“I don’t think so, playing five at the back personally, but if he is allowed to be himself, sign his own players, make the decisions and have the power, he will be great,” he told The Good, The Bad and The Football Podcast.

“But it doesn’t matter which manager you get in, they have to be allowed to do what’s made them great.”
