Victory in the top-of-the-table clash: An impressive FC Bayern Women side are league leaders once again! Coach José Barcala's team celebrated a 4-0 (1-0) win against SC Freiburg in the Google Pixel Women's Bundesliga on Tuesday evening and simultaneously knocked the side from the Breisgau region off the top spot. Vanessa Gilles (16th minute) put the Munich women ahead at the FC Bayern Campus stadium. After the break, Lena Oberdorf (63'), Lea Schüller (80') and Klara Bühl (90') increased the lead.
Thanks to their home win on Matchday 4, the reigning German champions are now top of the women's Bundesliga table with ten points and a three-point lead over Freiburg. There was also good news for Giulia Gwinn, who celebrated her comeback in the final stages of the game after recovering from a knee ligament injury.
Third win in their fourth game: FC Bayern Women had every reason to be happy.
The Bayern women started the game well, keeping possession and moving the ball around. But there was a shock after 12 minutes, when midfield strategist Sarah Zadrazil had to come off injured. However, the Munich side refused to be thrown off course and took the lead shortly afterwards. After a corner from Carolin Simon, Gilles (16) headed in for a much-celebrated opener. It was the centre-back's third goal in her fourth match. Ten minutes later, Momoko Tanikawa had the 2-0 at her feet after some good work from Bühl, but went just wide of the target from a promising position. Georgia Stanway's 42nd-minute effort went even closer, striking the outside of the post. It meant the scoreline remained tight, but the Bayern women's lead was well deserved.
Vanessa Gilles headed home a corner to make it 1-0 for FC Bayern Women.
The hosts came out of the dressing room full of energy and pressed for the second goal, but former Munich player Laura Benkarth in the SC goal and the Munich side's poor finishing initially prevented them from taking the lead. The spell was broken in the 63rd minute. After a corner kick, Stanway whipped the ball into the goalmouth area and Oberdorf bundled it into the net to make it 2-0. Substitute Schüller then sealed the win. After Benkarth could only deflect a header from the striker onto the crossbar in the 66th minute, the Germany international scored in the 80th minute to make it 3-0. Bühl then added a fourth in the 90th minute after some good work from Stanway.
Momoko Tanikawa had the chance to make life easier for her side early on.
The double winners continue their DFB Women's Cup campaign on Monday, 29 September at Borussia Dortmund, an 18:30 CEST kick-off. In the women's Bundesliga, the Munich team then host SV Werder Bremen on Saturday, 4 October at 14:00 CEST.
