FC Barcelona may have signed a goalkeeper who could keep his place between the posts for the next decade, but it looks as though they remain interested in signing a reliable deputy who can step in during his absence.
Their plans for the summer, then, still look more open than they might seem from the outside. Joan Garcia has taken ownership of the position, but that has not stopped the club from continuing to study the market for another opportunity.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Alex Remiro remains firmly on Barca’s radar and the club are still in contact with his agent. Deco and Bojan have kept communication alive as Barcelona weigh up whether to move this summer or wait until 2027, when the Real Sociedad goalkeeper would be available on a free transfer.
That is what makes this situation especially interesting. Remiro’s contract runs until June 2027, but because he would be only one year away from leaving for nothing next summer, a move has become far more realistic than before.
The report notes that what was once a €50 million clause could now effectively come down to around €15 million, and possibly even less. From a Barcelona perspective, that turns Remiro into the kind of market opportunity the club cannot easily ignore.
He is experienced, proven in La Liga, and still at an age where he can offer immediate reliability without representing an oversized long-term gamble. The key issue, as usual, is not just the transfer fee. It is Barcelona’s FFP situation.
There is also the wider goalkeeper puzzle to consider. Wojciech Szczesny is under contract until 2027, though Barcelona reportedly retain the option to end that deal after this season, while Marc-Andre ter Stegen still has a long contract and a significant salary.
There are also talented goalkeepers out on loan, like Inaki Pena, who can take on the role of deputy. For that reason, it does not make much sense to spend money on Remiro this summer. In 2027, it could be a different story, and we will have to wait and see how things play out.
