Coming into the game against Rayo Vallecano, everyone expected Hansi Flick to make some changes to the FC Barcelona starting line-up after a gruelling game against Newcastle United mid-week. Thus, a near-unchanged starting XI came as quite the surprise.
The German manager had the chance to freshen things up against Rayo Vallecano, but instead, he trusted continuity. As quoted by Mundo Deportivo, Flick addressed that decision before kick-off and made it clear that he was not overly concerned by the physical load on his players. His message was simple:
“I am only worried about Barca’s next match, and that is against Rayo.”
That line says a lot about Flick’s thinking. From a Barcelona perspective, he did not want to treat this fixture as a bridge to something else or as a game to manage with one eye on the future. He wanted to win the match in front of him first.
Flick also backed the physical condition of the players he chose, saying they were all “ready to play.” That is important, because it suggests the decision was not reckless, but based on confidence in the squad’s recovery levels.
The logic is understandable. Rayo are awkward opponents, and this is not the kind of game where a coach always wants to experiment too much. Flick probably saw rhythm, chemistry and momentum as more valuable than rotation for rotation’s sake.
He also showed the same mindset when asked about Barca’s perfect home run since returning to Spotify Camp Nou. Flick said:
“The only thing that matters to me is the next match. I do not focus on whether I have won the matches at home, I only care about winning the next match.”
The biggest thing tilting Flick in this direction would probably be the fact that this game comes just ahead of an international break. What this allows is for the German manager to get his team to finish off on a high before dispersing for the break. It remains to be seen how the result of the game plays out.
