Having lost Inigo Martinez during the summer transfer window, FC Barcelona are exploring the idea of signing a new left-footed centre-back next summer.

It is one of sporting director Deco’s main priorities, along with the acquisition of a new full-back as well as a top striker to succeed Robert Lewandowski.

As has already been reported, one of the names that Barcelona are looking at as an option for the left-footed centre-back position happens to be Nico Schlotterbeck of Borussia Dortmund.

The German defender’s age, ball-playing abilities, and the fact that he is left-footed make him a very appealing target for Barça. Not to forget his contract situation, as he will have only one year left on his deal in 2026.

Bayern Munich, Real Madrid eyeing Nico Schlotterbeck

However, signing Schlotterbeck could prove to be a difficult challenge for Barcelona thanks to competition from several other European giants.

Indeed, according to BILD in Germany, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have emerged as potential suitors for the 25-year-old Borussia Dortmund star.

The Bundesliga champions have been eyeing Schlotterbeck since 2022, when he was still at SC Freiburg, and sense an opening this summer, owing to his contract situation.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid are also alert to the developments as there are significant question marks over the continuity of veteran defenders David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger beyond the ongoing campaign.

Schlotterbeck, for his part, is in no hurry to rush into renewal talks with Dortmund, who are willing to offer him an extension until 2030.

The German international is demanding a salary higher than €10 million per year, with the intention of becoming one of the top earners at Signal Iduna Park, while knowing that big clubs could approach him in the summer.

With Bayern Munich and Real Madrid now throwing their hat in the ring, Barcelona find themselves with added competition in the race for Schlotterbeck.
