Barcelona hold firm on forward’s renewal plans despite comments; no big pay raise considered | OneFootball

FC Barcelona have no intention of altering their position on Ferran Torres despite the forward’s recent public comments regarding his future and the reported interest from Paris Saint-Germain, reports Mundo Deportivo.

While the club were somewhat surprised by the attacker’s latest remarks during his promotional tour in the United States, they insist their plan has not changed.

The Blaugrana want the 26-year-old star to stay, but any contract renewal will only be addressed after the summer transfer window’s busiest period.

Renewal planned for september

Barcelona maintain they informed Ferran weeks ago that they want to extend his contract, but discussions would have to wait until September due to Financial Fair Play restrictions.

The club’s immediate priority remains balancing the squad through transfers and departures before opening renewal negotiations.

Internally, officials were more surprised by one particular comment from the player, wherein he said: “Barcelona have to show that they want me.”

According to club sources, they believe that message ignores the fact they have already communicated their intention to offer him a new deal.

The La Liga champions also feel they have consistently backed Ferran throughout his time at the club.

Even during difficult periods last season, when goals were hard to come by, the club continued to value his professionalism, work ethic and commitment rather than judging him solely on his statistics.

No big salary increase planned

Despite wanting to retain the Spain international, Barcelona are not prepared to significantly improve his current financial package.

The club believes Ferran’s salary already reflects his role within the squad, meaning any renewal proposal is expected to extend his stay without including a substantial wage increase.

From Barcelona’s perspective, playing time is ultimately determined by Hansi Flick.

The coaching staff view selection as merit-based, pointing out that the manager trusted Ferran ahead of Robert Lewandowski at the beginning of last season whenever he felt the Spaniard deserved the opportunity.

New striker doesn’t change anything

Barcelona also reject the idea that pursuing another centre-forward would diminish Ferran’s standing.

The Blaugrana continue to prioritise the signing of Julian Alvarez following Lewandowski’s departure, but see that as strengthening the squad rather than replacing Ferran.

They also note that Ferran is not always Spain’s first-choice striker either, often operating behind Mikel Oyarzabal despite scoring the winning goal in the World Cup final after coming off the bench.

Barcelona’s message regarding PSG is equally straightforward. If Ferran truly wants to leave, the club expect him to communicate that decision directly.

They also want any interested club to submit a formal offer before discussions can begin. So far, the Catalans have received no official bid from PSG.

Within the club, there are even figures who believe Ferran’s recent comments may be part of a strategy to strengthen his negotiating position before contract talks begin.

Calm prevails

For now, Barcelona are not changing course. Their roadmap remains unchanged, and they are prepared to wait.

If Ferran decides he wants to leave and PSG present an offer that satisfies Joan Laporta and Deco, the club will evaluate it.

Until then, Barcelona remain committed to their original plan: renew the player under their existing financial framework.
