FC Barcelona have a major decision to make at the end of the current season. Robert Lewandowski is in the final year of his contract, and it feels unlikely there will be an extension for the 37-year-old.
Assuming he leaves this summer, Barcelona need to bring in the right kind of replacement to lead the forward line. Ferran Torres will be around, but the club desperately needs a Lewandowski replacement.
A number of strikers have been linked with a potential move, and now, according to Fichajes, the club has identified free agent Dusan Vlahovic as an option. The Serbian is spending his final year at Juventus.
Vlahovic would arrive on a free transfer next summer, but his salary demands are unlikely to be low. This is a problem for Barcelona as they continue to navigate financial troubles, and they cannot break their wage structure to bring in a player.
The Serbian striker has been in Turin for a few seasons now and has been a consistent performer in a struggling Juve side. However, he has never been a ceiling-breaker and might not be the player Barcelona need to replace Lewandowski.
Juventus are also keen to offload Vlahovic in January to avoid losing him for free. Lewandowski is one of the best strikers ever to play the game, and to replicate his output, they need to bring in a No. 9 of similar quality. The Serbian is not the answer.
Let’s hope there is no truth to this story and that Barcelona have better options than Vlahovic to lead the line in the post-Lewa era.
