According to El Periódico de Catalunya, Barcelona have signed Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon in a rapid deal worth €70m plus €10m in add-ons. He is expected to sign his contract in the coming hours.
Gordon, developed as a winger and increasingly used through the middle, arrives as cover after Robert Lewandowski’s departure and with Marcus Rashford’s loan ending on 30 June. A permanent Rashford deal would cost €30m to Manchester United and his salary is at elite level. Rashford has rebuilt his stock at Barcelona, earning an England recall.
Barcelona first reached agreement with the player, then struck a deal with Newcastle despite interest from Bayern and Liverpool. Newcastle, owned by a vastly wealthy Saudi fund, were under no pressure to sell, but the forward’s desire to move to Barcelona proved decisive. Liverpool are seeking a forward after Mo Salah’s departure, and Gordon is an avowed Reds fan.
Sporting director Deco had virtually tied up the move on his last trip to London, easing pressure on Barcelona’s attacking rebuild. There is also concern that Raphinha could face another injury-hit campaign after the World Cup.
Gordon has 10 goals and 2 assists in 12 Champions League matches for Newcastle. He scored in the opening group game, a 1-2 defeat, playing as a centre-forward, then hit four against Qarabag in just 45 minutes. Newcastle were later eliminated by Barcelona, drawing 1-1 in the first leg before a 7-2 loss at the Camp Nou.
