Barcelona will postpone forward’s renewal until September to prioritise new signing registrations

Barcelona’s dream of signing Julian Alvarez took a massive blow earlier this week when Atletico Madrid’s president and CEO came out to publicly declare that the player would stay in Madrid next season.

The saga is far from done, but every passing day renders the deal more complicated, leaving Barcelona in a complicated situation considering that Robert Lewandowski is no longer at the club.

As matters stand, Ferran Torres is Barcelona’s only option to play as a number 9, and the Spaniard too has been linked with an exit to PSG. There is, however, talk of a possible renewal with Barcelona as well given the club’s situation.

Barcelona will postpone Torres’ exit

As reported by AS in a recent update, Barcelona will postpone renewing Torres’ contract until September and will not rush into the extension.

The primary reason behind the said decision is a clause in Torres’ contract which obligates the Catalans to pay Manchester City €7 million when he signs his renewal. Further, they must also improve his salary in a potential new deal.

The club’s current financial priorities, however, are related to the new arrivals. Not only must Barcelona financially accommodate a new striker but they also have to ensure the registration of the new signings Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon.

Torres’ renewal, thus, is better postponed in view of Financial Fair Play.

The risk of the decision

PSG are actively monitoring Torres’ situation and Luis Enrique is said to be a fan of the player’s versatility. His contractual situation, needless to say, is another factor that entertains them.

Already in the final year of his deal, PSG believe they can price the player out this summer for a budget fee, just as Barcelona did with Karim Adeyemi.

Delaying Torres’ extension until after the summer transfer window, needless to say, entertains PSG’s idea of swooping the Spaniard even before Barcelona sign another forward.

Further, it hands the French club the upper hand in negotiations as they can use his expiring deal as a leverage point to drive down the transfer fee.

It thus remains to be seen how Barcelona handle the Torres saga and whether it backfires on them. In any case, having adequate centre-forward options for next season must be the club’s priority at any point.
