Danny Rohl has been officially confirmed as the latest Rangers manager
Sheffield Wednesday’s Barry Bannan has dismissed the idea that he might support Rangers now that Danny Rohl has been appointed as head coach.
It was confirmed by the Glasgow outfit that the German has taken on the role following the departure of Russell Martin earlier this month.
The 36-year-old is taking on his first role since his exit from Hillsborough in the summer, having earned a lot of plaudits from his time with the Championship side.
Rohl departed following a difficult summer, with financial issues behind the scenes causing an exodus of players.
Sheffield Wednesday finished 20th and 12th under Rohl during his season-and-a-half in charge of the Yorkshire outfit.
Bannan has posted on social media his commitment to supporting Celtic despite the arrival of his former boss at Ibrox.
When goaded into answering the question by his former teammate Josh Windass, he made his feelings clear on where he stands regarding the Old Firm derby.
“What a silly question,” he wrote, via his Instagram stories, accompanied by a cloverfield emoji to indicate his allegiance with Celtic.
Bannan spent a couple of years in the Celtic academy system in the very early stages of his career, before progressing to Aston Villa in 2004.
While he never played for the club at a senior level, it’s clear where he stands on the great Rangers/Celtic divide regardless of his relationship to Rohl.
Sheffield Wednesday have struggled for results since the departure of Rohl in the summer, with his assistant coach Henrik Pedersen taking over for him in the dugout.
The Owls are bottom of the Championship table, having earned six points from their opening 10 fixtures.
Significant financial issues behind the scenes has left Pedersen with a very small squad to work with, with Bannan being one of their few experienced stars.
Rohl was highly regarded at Sheffield Wednesday, with his work as head coach turning the club around from near-certain relegation to 12th in the league in just over a year.
It was clear that he was bringing the team forward in the right direction, and Bannan in particular was someone who thrived during the 36-year-old’s time in charge.
Now that he is at Rangers, fans will be looking on with envy, especially as financial issues continue to plague the Yorkshire outfit.
