Bayer Leverkusen head coach Erik ten Hag may be set for the sack after just two Bundesliga matchdays. As incomprehensible as such news may sound, the rumor is currently being reported by Germany’s most reliable footballing publications. Kicker Leverkusen correspondent Stephan van Nocks – one of the most reliable sources close to the club – reports that the Werkself bosses wish to pull the plug early on what they consider to be a failed experiment.
None of the B04 bosses are backing the Dutchman following yesterday’s embarrassing collapse against Werder Bremen.Ten Hag’s statements after the match which – which seemed to clearly lay the blame on club management’s handling of the player personnel situation – may have something to do with the fact that the front office no longer wishes to work with him.
Newly appointed Bayer Leverkusen captain Robert Andrich also seemed totally disenchanted with the project in his post-match statements yesterday. Although Andrich was himself named skipper by ten Hag, Andrich complained that he felt there was no cohesion in the team’s approach. Andrich contradicted his coach in his own post-match interview.
“This has nothing to do with unrest or player changes,” Andrich remarked in the mixed zone. “but rather with the team on the pitch. We have too many people preoccupied with other things. We have too many people who are concerned only with themselves. Everyone played for themselves. Everyone ran around the pitch on their own.“
“First, we need to to have the players,” ten Hag also said. “There’s been a major upheaval. A lot has changed in the leadership and hierarchy of the team. Now new players have to step up. We didn’t do that well today.“
After club management refused to back him, van Nocks claims that Leverkusen will make a final decision on ten Hag’s future after the transfer window closes on Monday. The veteran German footballing journalist nevertheless goes on to note that Rolfes and his staff have “probably already made up their minds“.
