After his move to AC Milan failed due to a medical, it appears the Nigerian will look for a way to be part of the Dutch coach's plans for the upcoming period, both domestically and in European competitions.
The 24-year-old Nigerian striker missed the previous match, a 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen, and despite the failure of his move to AC Milan, some press reports indicate that there is clear interest from West Ham United in the Nigerian player.
Bayer Leverkusen manager Erik ten Hag has issued a clear challenge to striker Victor Boniface, emphasizing that the Nigerian international must earn his way back into the team through consistent training and hard work. The Dutch coach's comments followed a match in which stand-in striker Patrik Schick solidified his claim to the starting role with a decisive brace.
Ten Hag confirmed that Boniface, who was absent from the squad the previous week, has recently returned to training. However, the manager was unequivocal about the path back to the pitch, stating, “When he is training every day, the whole week, then he can fight for his position.” This underscores a meritocratic approach, suggesting that talent alone is no longer sufficient for selection.
The striker's position is currently held by the in-form Patrik Schick, who has seamlessly become the focal point of Leverkusen's attack under Ten Hag—a role he initially wrested from Boniface during Xabi Alonso’s tenure. This development marks a significant turn of fortune for Boniface, whose dream debut season—which included a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga triumph and a Rookie of the Season award—now feels distant.
Complicating his quest for redemption is the lingering tension from last season’s transfer saga, wherein Boniface’s attempt to force a move to the Saudi Pro League damaged his standing with the club's leadership. Now, to reclaim his place, he must prove his commitment not only on the training ground but to the club itself.
Last week he wasn’t there, and therefore he wasn’t in the squad. When he is there, then he can be part of the group, He trained with us the last two days, but now he has to fight for his place. When he is training every day, the whole week, then he can fight for his position.
