Bayer Leverkusen have re-signed Kerim Alajbegovic from RB Salzburg, bringing the 18-year-old back to the BayArena this summer.

According to BuLi News, Leverkusen activated a buy-back clause reportedly worth €8 million and agreed a contract until 2031. On Thursday, Alajbegovic converted the decisive penalty against Wales to send Bosnia & Herzegovina into the World Cup play-offs final.

Leverkusen sold Alajbegovic to Salzburg last summer for a reported €4 million. His performances in Austria convinced the club to trigger the clause. He can operate as a winger or in attacking midfield.

Sporting managing director Simon Rolfes said the teenager surpassed high expectations quickly, became a key figure for Salzburg and proved himself on the international stage. He added that Leverkusen are confident Alajbegovic will be important in the coming years.

Alajbegovic described the move as a step to a higher level, said he knows the club and its standards, and called Bayer 04 Leverkusen a top-16 European side that regularly compete at the top of the Bundesliga. He wants to follow the path of young players who have made their mark there.

This season, he has scored 11 goals and supplied three assists in 36 appearances for RB Salzburg in all competitions.
