„We didn’t play well in the first half,“ explained the Bayern sporting director. He was all the more impressed by what happened after the break: „To then react like that is madness.“

For Freund, the performance after the break was a clear sign of the team’s inner strength. Despite the clear deficit, Munich did not fall apart, but worked their way back into the match with a lot of energy.

„This team is very special, this team spirit, this mentality, this character – it really is unique,“ emphasized the 48-year-old. The sporting director was not highlighting individual players, but rather focusing on the united reaction of the entire team.

The comeback could also play an important role with regard to the upcoming tasks. FC Bayern already have the semi-final first leg of the Champions League at Paris Saint-Germain waiting for them on Tuesday. Freund said: „That gives us a lot of energy for Tuesday too.“

Vincent Kompany had already given a similar assessment of his players‘ reaction. „The team took up the fight and put aside any fear of injury that might have held them back,“ said the Bayern coach after the game. Referring to the emotional reaction after the final whistle, Kompany added: „They celebrated as if it had been a relegation match. I love that.“

For Munich, the victory in Mainz was not only valuable in sporting terms, but the way in which the record champions came back after a weak first half also provided an emotional tailwind ahead of the clash with PSG.
