The Wednesday print edition of Sport Bild reports that German record champions FC Bayern Munich are preparing to install a new sporting director for their famous developmental campus. Experienced Bundesliga coach Markus Weinzierl currently serves as the athletic director in charge of the Bayern reserve squad and four of the FCB junior teams. Weinzierl has held the appointments for just over a year, but will not have his expiring contract renewed at the end of the season.
Ironically enough, Weinzierl’s replace will come from the last German football club he coached. After parting company with Augsburg for the second time, Weinzierl coached 1. FC Nürnberg in the 2. Bundesliga between October 2022 and February 2023. Bayern installed Weinzierl as a campus director in January 2024. Former Bayern Munich professional Michael Wiesinger has been running the Nürnberg academy since 2019 and will now head to the FCB Campus
Kicker reports that Wiesinger’s appointment will be part of an overall shake-up that sees transfer of Bayern Campus administrative responsibilities move from FCB board-member-for-sport Max Eberl to club sporting director Christoph Freund. Apparently, there have been some major disagreements between Eberl and newly appointed director of scouting Nils Schmadtke.
The club assumes that Freund will work better with Schmadtke, Wiesinger, and long-time academy director Jochen Sauer. Kicker does not rule out a departure for Schamdtke as well. Kicker Bayern Campus correspondent Georg Holzner claims that Schmadtke has, rather controversially, “turned his entire department upside down“. Schmadtke’s contract also expires this summer.
