Bayern Munich’s Champions League win over Union St. Gilloise on Wednesday evening came with its fair share of unfavorable moments. The German record champions nevertheless saw no real need to concentrate on the few proverbial “flies in the ointment”. Bayern are through to the UCL knockouts despite a weak first half, a sending off, and (yes) a rare penalty miss from Harry Kane.
German football’s “Personality of the Year” has in fact missed two penalties this year. Thanks to the fact that Kane’s misses in came in the opening round of the DFB Pokal and Wednesday’s Champions League fixture, however, the England national team captain’s Bundesliga penalty record remains intact.
Given that Kane also happened to bag a brace in the latest UCL victory, FCB board-member-for-sport Max Eberl could only laugh off a question about it in the mixed zone.
“I think I need to talk him up a bit,” Eberl noted. “Of course I’m kidding. He can miss on occasion. I think he’s irritated about it. I think he placed in to get it under the roof, so to speak, but he hit the crossbar.
“We’re happy to have Harry as he usually breaks the deadlock,” Eberl continued. “He scored off of two dead ball situations [one earlier penalty and a corner] that decided the game. We know we can rely on Harry.”
“I’ll do better next time,” Kane himself noted in his own mixed zone interview. “We have a busy schedule in February. That’s why today was an important victory.”
