Ben White is back in the England squad after more than two years away, with Thomas Tuchel handing the Arsenal defender a late call-up following Jarell Quansah’s withdrawal through injury ahead of the upcoming fixtures against Uruguay and Japan.
The selection marks White’s first involvement since leaving England’s camp during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. While his departure at the time was officially attributed to personal reasons, he remained absent from international squads throughout the remainder of Gareth Southgate’s tenure.
Now restored to the group under Tuchel, the versatile defender has another opportunity to build on his four senior caps as competition intensifies ahead of this summer’s World Cup in North America.
Harvey Barnes has also been called into the squad after Eberechi Eze was forced to pull out with injury. The Newcastle winger has enjoyed an impressive campaign at club level and will be hoping to earn only his second appearance for the national team, having last featured six years ago.
Tuchel is expected to rotate personnel across the two friendlies as he finalises his thinking ahead of naming his tournament squad. Several established internationals are due to join the camp later in the week before the meeting with Japan.
With places still up for grabs, the matches could prove decisive for players pushing to secure a late spot on the plane this summer.
