Gustavo Marques, on loan from Benfica at Red Bull Bragantino, is under fire in Brazil after comments deemed sexist about referee Daiane Muniz following their Campeonato Paulista exit to São Paulo, according to Glorioso 1904.

The centre-back criticised the Federação Paulista de Futebol for appointing a woman to a game of that magnitude and said the official had ruined his team’s match. His remarks, delivered pitchside, were poorly received and he then offered a retraction in the interview area.

In his first comments he urged the federation to avoid naming a woman for such fixtures. He added that he respected women, noted he was married and had a mother, and apologised if his words had offended women.

He later issued a public apology, saying he had already asked forgiveness from Daiane Muniz, one of her assistants, his partner and his mother.

Marques said he was heated and nervous at the time and that he had said things he should not. He acknowledged he was at fault, revealed that his wife and mother had reprimanded him, and said his wife had insulted him.

This year the 24-year-old, valued at 1.4 million euros, has played nine official matches, six in the Campeonato Paulista and three in the Brasileirão. Across 810 minutes he has scored two goals.
