Bernardo Silva says defeat for Manchester City at Anfield would have spelled the end of their title hopes, after they came from behind to win late on.
After Dominik Szoboszlai had put Liverpool ahead with a stunning free-kick, Bernardo Silva poked home from close range before Erling Haaland scored a late penalty to move City back within six points of league leaders Arsenal.
“I feel that the whole team knew before the game that if we lost this game, probably the title race is over,” Bernardo Silva told Sky Sports after the game.
“They’re still in a much better position than us but we felt like we needed to win this game so obviously that puts us a bit closer. The hope is there, we’re going to fight until the end but it’s still six points so we’re happy but we need to keep doing our job which we haven’t lately.
“For the distance that we have to Arsenal, obviously coming here to Anfield, for me it’s the toughest place in the Premier League by far.
“Usually for most teams, a draw is not a bad result but we needed to go for another goal so when I scored, I was quite happy obviously because we were back in the game but we needed another one and Erling got it.
“Obviously very happy but these points count as any other points in any game.
“It’s been frustrating in the beginning of the year because in my opinion, we didn’t do our job properly, and we could be much closer to Arsenal.
“But today, very happy because as I said, it’s the toughest place to come in England and to get the first win here in nine years apart from the Covid year, you can imagine how tough it is to win here and I’m really happy.”
