FLW's Birmingham fan pundit shares their thoughts on a potential move for Jamie Vardy this summer

Birmingham City are preparing to push for a top-six finish in the Championship next campaign, having missed out on a place last time around, as Chris Davies prepares to make some key additions during the summer transfer window.

Birmingham are coming off the back of what can only be described as an underwhelming campaign.

The Blues managed to accumulate 111 points in League One during the 2024/25 season, breaking the EFL points record in the process, and following promotion, they were hoping to continue that momentum in the Championship.

However, Chris Davies' side, despite spending over £50 million on new additions across the past two years, including the likes of Jay Stansfield, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Carlos Vicente, failed to find any sort of consistency and ultimately finished in 10th.

Davies seemed to be under pressure across various stages of the campaign, but it looks as though the former Leicester City assistant boss will remain in charge at St Andrews and lead the club into the summer.

With August Priske having joined Birmingham from Swedish side Djurgarden in January for around £6 million, allowing Lyndon Dykes to join Charlton Athletic, it leaves just the Dane and German team-mate Marvin Ducksch as the only other option up top, though Ducksch himself has been linked with a move away.

Davies may well be targeting another centre-forward this summer, and he could do a lot worse than the free signing of a player with a wealth of top-flight experience.

Birmingham City should consider Jamie Vardy signing on free transfer

Jamie Vardy scored exactly 200 times in exactly 500 appearances across 13 years with Leicester City, and has recently become a free agent at the age of 39 following the end of his contract with Italian side Cremonese.

Vardy has been linked with a return to Leicester and boyhood club Sheffield Wednesday following his release, but with nothing yet being reported to be in advanced stages, there is an opportunity for other sides to swoop in, including Birmingham.

Football League World's Birmingham fan pundit, Jason Moore, has shared their thoughts on the potential signing of Vardy and whether he would be a good fit in the Blues squad for the upcoming campaign.

Jason told FLW: "It's a weird one. I sit both in yes and no.

"If the link-up is like, yeah, Jamie Vardy's coming, I don't think I'd be upset by it. I just think it depends on all the factors. If you can get a cheap enough contract, and it's literally a season, then I don't see why not. He still seems fit enough, and he's definitely good enough to do it in the Championship.

"Where do I sit? You know what, for a season, I think I'd be up for it. Just throughout being the character in the dressing room as well, I think it'd probably be good. And to be fair, he's a winner.

"He's obviously not going to play every single game. So, you know, yeah, I'd take Jamie Vardy. If it's a season, and it works for everyone, it works for him, then yeah, I'd take Jamie Vardy.

"And to be fair with all his Netflix stuff, it'd be good exposure for the club again, which is, well, what they're after. So yeah, bring him in. If it's a season, bring him in. I'd be happy with it."

Having achieved the EFL points record with Birmingham in his first year in charge of the club, and as a head coach for that matter, Davies has a lot of credit in the bank.

However, Blues' owners are among the most ambitious, not just in the EFL, but in the world, and Premier League football within the next few years is a priority.

If Davies cannot cultivate a strong transfer window and a strong start to the campaign, it will be no surprise to see him replaced fairly swiftly, so for his sake, he must ensure success is on the brink of happening at St Andrews.

The addition of Vardy would only help Blues' efforts of reaching their goal, with his experience and quality unmatched on the market, and on a free transfer, they could do a lot worse.
