Boca go top: the table and what’s next in the Libertadores

Boca claimed its first win in its opening match of the 2026 Copa Libertadores group stage. The Xeneize beat Universidad Católica 2-1 away from home and went to the top of the standings.

The win in Chile, thanks to goals from Leandro Paredes and Adam Bareiro, left Claudio Úbeda’s team in first place in Group D. Although Cruzeiro beat Barcelona SC in Ecuador, goal difference puts the Xeneize on top.

The Ribera side will now switch focus back to the domestic league, because in four days it faces archrival Independiente de Avellaneda at La Bombonera. But after the match against El Rojo, Boca will return to Copa Libertadores action.

Boca is level at the top with Cruzeiro.

In its next match in the continental competition, the blue and gold side will host Barcelona of Ecuador. That will be on Tuesday, April 14 at 9 p.m. at Alberto J. Armando Stadium, in what will be Boca’s first home match of this Libertadores edition.

Boca’s 2-1 win over Católica left it with a +1 goal difference. The same points and goal difference as Cruzeiro, which beat Barcelona 1-0. However, it should be noted that CONMEBOL changed the tiebreak criteria, and the following points must be taken into account, even though only the first matchday has been played.
