Chelsea’s owners have a bad habit of putting their foot in their mouths when they speak at business conferences (which is the only time we hear from them). Todd Boehly has kept up that tradition.

“Finding those right elements, the first time at anything is tricky,” Boehly said in quotes picked up by the Sun.

“So you’re going to make mistakes and obviously having taken over in the circumstances that we did, basically the whole management team left.

“I was stuck being interim sporting director for the summer having no idea what made a good football player but knowing that Marc Cucurella, if Man City wants him, I want him, it was pretty simple that way.”

Chelsea owner proud of his own brainless summer

Todd Boehly speaks about Chelsea’s future at Stamford Bridge.

This is so stupid it’s hard to know where to begin. For one thing, Boehly is making it sound like he was forced to be an interim sporting director. He could easily have appointed an interim sporting director or promoted someone else from the recruitment department on a temporary basis.

There was nobody making him do it – he just wanted to play with his shiny new toy he’d spent billions on. The fact he was willing to spend tens of millions on transfers on contracts despite acknowledging he had no idea about what made a good football player is so brainless – how do these guys get so rich?

The deal for Cucurella worked out, but just think of all the horrific deals from that summer which didn’t.

Chelsea’s game against Arsenal today has prompted some combined XIs which favour the Blues.
