Borussia Dortmund are open to Kagawa taking a role with the club once his playing career ends, marketing director Carsten Cramer said. Shinji Kagawa, 37, remains a key figure for J1 League side Cerezo Osaka.

According to BuLi News, Cramer credited Kagawa for much of Dortmund’s popularity in Japan on the first day of their Japan tour. He noted it is the club’s fourth visit, a link he said is closely tied to Kagawa.

Cramer stressed that any move would depend on Kagawa’s wishes after retirement, but if he sought an off-field position at BVB, the club would be keen to involve him.

Dortmund face Cerezo Osaka on Wednesday, then play FC Tokyo before concluding the trip. The Black and Yellows will complete pre-season with Emirates Cup friendlies against Arsenal and AS Roma.

A two-time Bundesliga champion, Kagawa made 216 appearances for Dortmund across two spells. He later played in Spain, Greece and Belgium, returning to hometown club Cerezo Osaka in 2023.
