Jobe Bellingham has struggled in his early Borussia Dortmund career following his €30m move from Sunderland in the summer and after the Englishman’s introduction in the 73rd minute of Der Klassiker against Bayern Munich, it was the 20-year-old who played a decisive role in Michael Olise’s goal that gave Bayern a 2-0 lead.
Five minutes after coming on, Bellingham intercepted Luis Diaz’s cross but took the ball into the six-yard box and, unable to clear his lines, hit the ball against the onrushing Olise. But since then, BVB officials and players have rallied around the youngster.
According to Bild, Borussia Dortmund remain convinced that Bellingham will mature into a ‘difference-maker’ and, post-Bayern defeat, Sebastian Kehl immediately had a one-on-one meeting with BVB’s €30m signing in the changing room.
Per the report, Kehl’s message was one that urged Bellingham to overcome this setback and not dwell on his mistake. Speaking after the game, Pascal Groß added: “We all help each other. Jobe is part of the team and he’s supported just like everyone else. He’s getting better bit by bit.”
