Roy Hodgson was appointed as the temporary replacement, with the 78-year-old coming out of retirement to oversee the remainder of the campaign.

The Robins finished 12th in the Championship table, missing out on a play-off place by 11 points.

Bristol City reached the play-offs last year under Liam Manning, but he jumped ship to Norwich City following their defeat to Sheffield United in the semi-finals, which led to Struber’s arrival.

The search for his permanent successor is now well underway with the conclusion of the Championship campaign.

Here we look at all the latest news surrounding Bristol City’s search for a new head coach…

Lincoln City boss Michael Skubala emerged as a leading candidate to take over at Bristol City in the immediate aftermath of the season finishing.

However, it has been reported by Football Insider that the 43-year-old now wishes to remain in charge of the Imps.

He oversaw the club’s promotion from League One this year, with the team clinching the third division title in the process.

Skubala’s aim will now be to build a squad capable of surviving in the Championship beyond the next 12 months, with Lincoln preparing for their first season at this level since 1961.

John Mousinho targeted

Portsmouth manager John Mousinho is also on the shortlist of leading contenders to take over at Ashton Gate.

It has been claimed by Football Insider that the 40-year-old is being heavily targeted by the Robins in their pursuit of a new head coach.

He guided Pompey to a second successful survival against relegation from the Championship this year, with the team coming 18th in the table.

However, his future at Fratton Park is up in the air going into the summer, leading to the possibility that he could make the switch to Bristol City.

Steven Gerrard has also been linked with the vacancy at Bristol City in recent weeks, and he could yet take over in place of his former Liverpool and England boss.

The former Aston Villa manager has hinted that a decision on his future could come within the next two to three weeks after he confirmed that’s how long it will take for him to determine his level of participation in an upcoming All Star Legends match involving Liverpool and Man United in October.

“It's a fantastic event in a couple of months' time,” said Gerrard, via the Daily Record.

“I'm hoping to be available to come over to be a part of it.

“I should have a decision in two, three weeks."

Rangers join Steven Gerrard pursuit

Bristol City aren’t the only club to have taken an interest in Gerrard’s potential return to management in recent weeks.

The 45-year-old has been linked with Burnley since the departure of Scott Parker after their relegation to the Championship was confirmed.

It has now also been reported by Alan Nixon that Rangers are eyeing Gerrard as a potential replacement to Danny Rohl.

The ex-England international was previously in charge at Ibrox and he oversaw their first league title win in a decade in 2021, so his return could be quite welcome among the Rangers supporters.

However, no decision has yet been made over the next step in his career, as he eyes his first managerial role since January 2025.
