Manchester United have had an indifferent start to the new Premier League season, picking up only one win in three.
But the results have not always matched the performances. Like in the first game, the Red Devils should have annihilated Arsenal given the sheer level of dominance, but ended up conceding a soft goal, which led to an unlucky loss.
Against Fulham, the 20-time English league champions should have been out of sight, but for some inexplicable misses and Ruben Amorim’s second-half decisions meant the momentum ultimately fizzled out.
United had to leave Craven Cottage with only a point to show for their efforts. The goals did flow against Burnley, but it should have been a far easier win than what ultimately occured.
The lack of league wins coupled with the EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby Town have meant the head coach is under tremendous pressure.
But it is not all doom and gloom if statistics are anything to go by. While United players have scored only once from open play thus far in the English top-flight, there are definitely encouraging signs.
As per Statman Dave on X (formerly Twitter), the Old Trafford side lead the Premier League when it comes to runs in behind the opponent’s defence.
And not surprisingly, new signing Bryan Mbeumo leads from the front in that aspect.
United have carved open chances with ease this season, with only their finishing and great goalkeeping denying them more goals this season.
“Manchester United have made more off-ball runs behind the opponents defensive line than any other team in the Premier League this season (131).
“Bryan Mbeumo has made the most of any player (54). Added some dynamism to Man Utd’s attack.”
The Cameroonian was brought to the club for exactly this, and he has been a breath of fresh air since arriving.
Now for Amorim and his coaching staff to improve the conversion rate, and the team could yet explode this season. Fans are waiting for this to happen.
