According to Diario Vasco, Burgos are best placed to sign Jon Karrikaburu from Real Sociedad, although talks are not concluded. The striker’s future appears to lie away from Donostia as La Real shape their squad.

Karrikaburu, 23, is sidelined by pubic pain, is not training with the group and did not travel to the Birmingham leg of pre-season, staying in Zubieta to recover. He has long known he is not in Matarazzo’s plans.

He burst into focus with a goal spree for Real Sociedad C in 2021, then impressed for Sanse under Xabi Alonso. A swift first-team debut followed under Imanol, but he has not sustained that rise at senior level.

Burgos have stepped up after selling their number nine Fer Niño to Elche for almost three million euros, and are seeking a striker to help match last season’s 72 points. Coach Sergio Francisco, now joined by Iosu Rivas, knows Karrikaburu well from that prolific 2021 campaign and regards him as an attractive option.

Interest persists elsewhere in Liga Hypermotion, though his high salary complicates most moves. Sporting Gijón keep him on a shortlist while focusing on Álex Forés, and Córdoba explored a deal but the cost is prohibitive. He has already had spells at Leganés, Alavés, Andorra and Racing.

Last term he made eight first-team appearances for 153 minutes, with injuries halting momentum. He was the only Real player left unused in their first pre-season match against Racing while fit, before his current setback.
