Carles Martinez Novell named Bayer Leverkusen head coach a month after leaving Toulouse | OneFootball

Bayer Leverkusen have named Carles Martinez Novell as their new head coach, the club said in a statement. The 42-year-old takes the job a month after leaving Toulouse following three seasons.

He succeeds Kasper Hjulmand, who took charge in September. Martinez Novell and Leverkusen have a verbal agreement on a deal running to 2028, giving the Catalan his first taste of the Bundesliga.

The coach had been linked with roles in Spain, notably at Girona, who were relegated to Liga 2.

Leverkusen will compete in the Europa League next season.

Martinez Novell knows the competition from Toulouse’s 2023-24 campaign, which included a 3-2 home win over Liverpool in the group stage.

They were eliminated by Benfica in the last 16, with results of 2-1 and 0-0.
