Marco Silva is increasingly close to replacing José Mourinho at Benfica, and former winger Carlitos says it would be the right call.

“I think Benfica would be making a great signing. It would be a huge pride for me to see Benfica appoint Marco Silva.” He was speaking to Renascença.

“Since leaving Estoril he aimed to coach a big club. He coached Sporting, it is true, but I consider Benfica to have a superior dimension.”

“Coaching Benfica is the pinnacle of a career for any Portuguese coach. It is not a step back. Benfica are a huge club and for a Portuguese coach even more so.”

Carlitos, a former Portugal international, made 51 official appearances for Benfica and worked with Marco Silva at Estoril.

The agreement between Marco Silva and Benfica is understood to be fully in place, although formal confirmation still hinges on events in Madrid. Only after Real Madrid’s elections on Sunday would Florentino Pérez announce José Mourinho’s return to the Bernabéu if re-elected. After that confirmation and payment of the €15 million release clause, Benfica could move to present Silva as first-team head coach.
