Manchester United are expected to utilise the upcoming transfer windows to rebuild their midfield.

This process should have begun last summer, but it did not.

INEOS were prepared to sanction a headline midfield swoop, yet the transfer proved tricky.

Brighton refused to let United’s top target Carlos Baleba leave. United saw little point in forcing the move, wary that The Seagulls might exploit their desperation.

So Baleba’s proposed summer 2025 switch to Old Trafford collapsed.

However, as it fell through, one thing became clear: this was a transfer worth revisiting.

Yet as United prepare to reignite their pursuit, fresh obstacles continue to emerge.

Obstacles

The club may have to fend off interest from other top sides, including Liverpool. Then there’s the ambitious asking price.

Teamtalk report: “United do not feel he is worth £100million at this stage and ideas are needed to figure out how to make the numbers work for them.”

Add to that the fact Baleba is a dream signing for Amorim, the same Amorim whose Old Trafford future hangs in the balance, and the complications stack up. So why press ahead?

Too deep to abandon

Teamtalk reveal that whether Amorim stays or goes, the Baleba swoop remains firmly in INEOS’ plans.

The publication states:

“Crucially, however, the club would most likely retain an interest in him even if another manager was to take over at Old Trafford, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and other club chiefs ready to invest further in the squad.”

Obviously, Baleba is United’s dream signing for 2026. So, the Red Devils would rather navigate the obstacles, hefty price tag, and fierce competition than walk away.

United’s midfield has long cried out for Baleba’s qualities.

His high motor, pressing intensity, physicality, and ball-carrying prowess offer exactly what’s missing in their engine room.

Midfield overhaul

But the Cameroonian alone may not be the ultimate solution.

Alongside Baleba, United are actively pursuing another top midfield addition.

In parallel with the Brighton raid, the 20-time English champions remain heavily linked with two other Premier League talents: Adam Wharton and Elliot Anderson.

While Baleba looks set to answer United’s immediate need for a high-energy midfielder, one of Wharton or Anderson is being lined up to fill the void left by Christian Eriksen and the one Casemiro is expected to leave next summer. Bruno Fernandes’ long-term future at United also remains uncertain.

At some point next year, we could be treated to a completely reshaped United midfield.

Interesting times lie ahead for United and their engine room. Every fan will be itching to watch it all unfold.
