Edinson Cavani’s status at Boca Juniors has shifted from elite signing to a source of debate in Argentina. He has entered 2026 without continuity, restricted by niggling injuries, and his output has fallen short of expectations for a striker of his pedigree. According to Superdeporte, concern has grown among supporters and analysts.
In the recent clásico against Racing, sections of La Bombonera booed him after a subdued display, and he was substituted before the end.
World Cup winner Óscar Ruggeri delivered a scathing assessment on ESPN F90, saying Cavani should stop playing and that watching him on the pitch was painful, while acknowledging his outstanding career. He also questioned whether the veteran can meet the demands of Argentine football as he approaches 40.
Other pundits have queried the forward’s attitude and tangible impact on results, while former team-mates and friends, including Diego Godín, have defended his professionalism and stressed he still wants to turn the situation around.
The struggles are not new. At Valencia CF his latter spell underwhelmed, with goal droughts and a reduced role under the coaching staff. He departed at the end of that cycle when his contract expired, seeking a fresh start.
Recurring injuries and a stop-start rhythm have kept him far from being a reliable source of goals, and he appears increasingly anxious in front of goal. This season could prove decisive for his future.
