CD Castellón have settled in the upper reaches of the table and end the round in automatic promotion.
According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, this is their best standing since matchday 7 in 1992/93, when they led on 11 points with Lleida and Racing de Santander before finishing 10th.
A painful decline later sent them to Tercera División. After seven seasons they escaped in 2018. Voulgaris’s 2022 arrival in La Plana has driven steady growth.
This season they have taken another step. They fought for promotion to Segunda in 2023, won it in 2024, secured safety in 2025 and have entered 2026 entitled to dream.
A return to Primera feels closer than at any time since 1991. The 1989 promotion under Luiche still resonates, the Leganés win, their sixth straight at SkyFi Castalia, matched that home run.
Castellón resume training today for Sunday’s trip to Zaragoza at 18.30. Alberto Jiménez is suspended after his fifth yellow against Leganés.
Beñat Gerenabarrena topped an online readers’ poll for the Leganés win with 37 per cent, ahead of Mellot on 21 and Diego Barri on 16.
With Óscar Gil gone to Real Murcia, the club expect to confirm Nick Markanich’s exit today, the American set to return home on loan with an option to buy. Defender Ismael Fadel is registered with the B team.
Zaragoza drew at home with Real Sociedad B on Saturday and remain in the relegation zone. Soberón and full-back Aguirregabiria are expected back for Sunday.
