CD Castellón dealt major blow as Fabrizio Brignani tears right anterior cruciate ligament | OneFootball

El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that CD Castellón centre-back Fabrizio Brignani has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during Wednesday’s training, a major setback for the club.

The defender will undergo surgery and begin a lengthy rehabilitation that could keep him out for the entire season. It is among the most demanding injuries for a footballer, physically and mentally.

Brignani, born 13 January 1998, had cemented himself in the back line alongside Alberto Jiménez and Agustín Sienra after Castellón invested around one million euros to sign him from Mantova 1911 last term. At 1.92 metres he was dominant in the air. He is under contract until 2029 and was linked this summer with Primera División sides such as Deportivo de la Coruña.

In his first season he started 34 matches, logged 2163 minutes, received nine yellow cards and scored seven goals. One was the unforgettable 1-0 winner against Almería in the play-off semi-finals, finished with a superb backheel. He was a set-piece threat and ended as the team’s third-top scorer, behind Álex Calatrava on 15 and Ousmane Camara on 12.

Castellón now face a defensive reshuffle. With only three specialist centre-backs in the squad, Brignani’s absence leaves just Alberto Jiménez and Agustín Sienra in the position, while left-back José Albert could also fill in centrally.
