Stade Reims have announced the death of Lucien Muller at 93. The Frenchman was a pivotal coach in CD Castellón’s history, delivering promotion to Primera in 1972 and a Copa final the following year.

Before coaching, Muller was a France international midfielder who shone for Stade Reims. He later moved to Spain, playing for Real Madrid from 1962 to 1965, then FC Barcelona from 1965 to 1968.

He took charge of Castellón in 1970/71 in the Segunda División. In 1971/72 he secured promotion to Primera. The following season, with a largely unchanged squad that included Del Bosque alongside Cela, Planelles, Babiloni, Ferrer, Clares and Tonín, Castellón reached the Copa final and finished fifth in the league.

Muller stayed on for 1974/75, a campaign that ended in relegation. He then built a lengthy managerial career in Spain with Burgos, Zaragoza, Barcelona and Mallorca, and also worked at Monaco.

He returned to Castellón in 1991 to try to steady a troubled side, but could not prevent relegation. He remained in the dugout for the first part of 1991/92 in the Segunda.
