Manchester City appear to be assessing a next possible step for one of their brightest young talents, as Championship side Sheffield Wednesday emerge as a suitor.
The Premier League giants have made a habit of carefully planning the development paths of their Academy prospects, with the past few seasons seeing the likes of James McAtee, Liam Delap, and James Trafford benefit from temporary moves to the Championship.
In keeping with that approach, another highly rated teenager could now be set for his own loan spell in England’s second tier as Jaden Heskey – son of former England and Premier League striker Emile Heskey – steadily makes a name for himself in City’s youth ranks.
The 19-year-old forward has impressed at both Under-18 and Elite Development Squad level, showcasing pace, technical ability, and an eye for goal that has attracted attention from clubs outside the Etihad Stadium.
City’s strategy for young attackers has often included testing them in more physically demanding environments, something Championship football can provide. Past experience has shown the step up in intensity and competition can play a vital role in shaping players capable of returning to the Etihad ready to compete for first-team minutes.
Now, according to the information of the Sheffield Star’s Joe Crann, Sheffield Wednesday are believed to be one of the clubs considering a move for Manchester City’s Jaden Heskey.
The report explains that a loan move is being considered by City as Heskey continues his development, and the Hillsborough side are one club who are keeping tabs on the player’s situation.
Should a deal progress, Heskey would join a growing list of City youngsters gaining valuable experience in the EFL before either returning to fight for a spot in Pep Guardiola’s squad or moving on to establish themselves elsewhere.
Sheffield Wednesday, for their part, could see Heskey as a boost to their attacking options as they target progress in the Championship. It remains to be seen whether City will decide on an immediate loan or wait until later in the window to secure the best possible move.
The club’s recruitment and loans department have often worked deep into August to ensure prospects are placed in the right environment for development. Much will also depend on Wednesday’s willingness to guarantee meaningful minutes for Heskey, with City historically preferring loan destinations where their players can be assured of regular involvement.
Other Championship clubs – and possibly teams abroad – could yet enter the conversation should the right sporting and developmental conditions be met, with Girona consistently known to be a preferred destination for some of City’s more senior prospects.
