Brazilian wonderkid outshone Barca’s shining light at Stamford Bridge
Estevao Willian starred as Chelsea thrashed ten-man Barcelona 3-0 in the Champions League.
Enzo Maresca’s Blues played out of their skins at Stamford Bridge on a chilly Wednesday night, sweeping past the La Liga champions with ease in west London.
A Jules Kounde own goal opened the floodgates on 27 minutes, after Enzo Fernandez had seen two goals chalked off for handball and offside respectively.
The goal was made by a corner taken quickly by the home side, and Marc Cucurella flashed a driven cross across the box, which Ferran Torres and Kounde made a mess of on the line, before the ball span into the net.
Ronald Araujo was given his marching orders on the stroke of half-time, as the Barca captain was shown a second yellow card in 14 minutes after recklessly upending Cucurella to give Hansi Flick’s visitors an even steeper mountain to climb.
It took Estevao 10 minutes of the second half to get his richly-deserved goal, as the Brazilian wonderkid jinked and weaved his way into the box before arrowing a right-footed effort inside Joan Garcia’s near post.
It was 3-0 with just over a quarter-hour to play when Liam Delap stepped off the substitutes’ bench to notch his first goal for the club since his summer move from Ipswich Town.
Fernandez broke free down the left flank, delivering a low cross towards the English striker, who guided a first-time effort beyond the flailing Garcia.
Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s talismanic starlet, could not influence the game whatsoever, and he conceded defeat to Estevao in the battle of the wonderkids as Flick hauled the young Spaniard off with ten minutes to play.
There was a momentary VAR check, but all was cleared to hand Chelsea their third goal of the evening, and an even bigger three points, that will have them riding the crest of a wave ahead of their crunch showdown against Arsenal this weekend.
