In a recent report, journalist Pete O’Rourke stated that Chelsea are keeping tabs on Lazio defender Mario Gila. It has been mentioned that the Blues are eyeing a move to secure the services of the Spanish centre-back, but would face competition from Brighton and Hove Albion in pursuit of him.

Gila’s Impressive Form In Italian Football

Gila has made a solid start to this campaign as he has put in a few impressive displays for the Italian club on the defensive end of the field. The 25-year-old has made six appearances for Lazio this season in the league.

The Spanish talent has been a rock at the back for the Italian outfit and deserves credit for making nine tackles, eight blocks, four interceptions and 22 clearances in Serie A. He has even been accurate with his ball distribution after completing 89.3% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract at the Spanish club will expire in the summer of 2027, which could open the door for the Blues to sign him on the cheap next year.

What Will Gila Add To Chelsea Boss Enzo Maresca’s Side?

Gila is a tough-tackling defender who can read the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when required and can even play his way out from the back.

Standing at 1.85m, the Spanish sensation is a strong presence in the air as well. However, it remains to be seen whether he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League if the Blues manage to get him on board next summer.

Gila would add more bite and steel to Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca’s midfield. He is more than capable of fighting for regular first-team football at Stamford Bridge.

At 25, Gila has his best years ahead of him, which makes him a good choice for the West London club to consider in 2026. He would also help the Blues compete across all competitions in the coming years. However, Maresca has to give him some time to settle into life in England before he can get the best out of him at Chelsea.
