Matt Law’s appearance on the London is Blue podcast this week was really interesting, especially when it came to the atmosphere in press conferences at the moment, with Enzo Maresca ramping up the aggression levels.

“He worries me at the moment, more in his messaging. Because everything he says at the moment seems to be a dig. He can’t seem to let the defender thing go,” Law said.

Ahead of the Carabao Cup game in midweek Maresca said he might have to play in defence himself because of a lack of options, clearly referring back to his comments in the summer where he pretty openly asked for another option to replace the injured Levi Colwill.

“Everything’s a dig: it’s the defence, it’s Liverpool’s recruitment, it’s ‘Liverpool have won the league already’, it’s this, it’s that, I seem to remember digs about the striker thing. It’s like – why are you trying to pick fights? What are you fighting against? You’re clearly frustrated and angry – lots of managers get like this when the window is open, and I get that… it just doesn’t feel like he’s fully there. I worry about his messaging and I worry about him at the moment. He seems more intent on making points and picking fights than finding solutions or maybe even looking at himself.”

Maresca on a dangerous pathway

Despite covering Maresca’s every presser, we have to admit we hadn’t really noticed this trend – mainly because he’s always so spiky and terse even when things are going well, that it’s harder to detect when he’s in a bad mood.

But Law is right – the stuff about playing in defence himself was a clear message, and if results don’t improve and there are further injuries, we could see a real meltdown.
