Kieran Gill’s Chelsea Confidential pieces for the Daily Mail are always a good way of getting to grips with what’s going on at the club behind the scenes.
Sometimes it’s very detailed minutiae of specific things which aren’t quite weighty enough for their own piece, sometimes it’s more of a general whisper which isn’t quite specific enough for their own piece. In this case it’s the latter. Gill hints at some big spending to come, but indicates it could mean a wait until next summer.

“It is understood Chelsea made sure to leave cash in their reserves this summer for use in a future window,” Gill started, a phrase that will excite Blues fans already concerned about a lack of depth.
“They will decide closer to January on whether an area of the team requires bolstering, but Confidential has been told they could yet wait for the next summer before rejigging their squad further,” he continues.
“I would not be surprised if we hear familiar names cropping up again, though, as Chelsea have shown they are good at putting in the legwork in one window before making their move in another. That happened with Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho as they declared their interest in the duo in January, then signed them in the summer.”
We’re sure Chelsea still have cash in the bank, and we’re sure that they have big plans to spend it. Right now their issue may be more technical, however. UEFA restrictions mean that they can only spend money they make, and they can only make that money selling players registered in the Champions League squad this year.
So for now, it may be irrelevant how much they have saved up.
