Liverpool have signed Jeremy Jacquet ahead of Chelsea. The Blues' mistake confirmed the deal.
Jeremy Jacquet will officially join Liverpool in the summer after completing a deal on deadline day. The centre-back remains at Rennes for the rest of the season - but he's now very much locked in as the future at Anfield.
Jacquet is regarded as one of the absolute best prospects in Europe in his position. In fact, he joins Giovanni Leoni in that regard, who signed for the Reds back in the summer.
Now Liverpool have an incredibly exciting pair. But unlike Leoni, the Reds had to really fight to land Jacquet.
Chelsea had a huge interest in him and were thought to be favourites at one stage. Sky Sports were even reporting that Jacquet 'only' wanted to move to Stamford Bridge.
That proved not to be the case, of course. And it seems that Chelsea may have shot themselves in the foot.
Fabrizio Romano gave some information of what happened here, with Jacquet happy to move to Chelsea but then ultimately deciding it wasn't the place for him. And it seems the Blues' decisions to keep hold of other young centre-backs swung things.
Notably, their deadline-day decision to recall Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg influenced Jacquet.
"Chelsea decision to keep [Josh] Acheampong for long term, reject bids for him and considering to recall Mamadou Sarr impacted Jacquet decision," wrote Romano on Twitter.
"Chelsea having 3/4 young CBs with Sarr, Acheampong, [Aaron] Anselmino & co impacted final choice."
