Chelsea lost 3-1 to Brighton at home yesterday, another painful result from a season which has been full of them already.
The London is Blue podcast had their favourite analyst CFCCentral on to look back at the game, and he pointed to some chilling stats about our start to the season.
It felt like we started the season with a solid defence but a lack of spark in attack. Now we’ve also lost our defensive stability.
Trevoh Chalobah’s contact with a Brighton striker on the edge of the box.
“Last season Chelsea had fourteen errors leading to goals in the Premier League, this season we’ve played eight games and I think had six. That is not something you want to see from a team. That is reaching dangerously error prone, you know, cataclysmic,” the analyst explained.
Staying at this rate of errors would put us on course for more than 28 this season – the record is Southampton with 18 from last year.
“You do not expect this from a top four team Premier League team. I like to be optimistic, but there’s just a lack of experience, a lot of nervousness in the back line. There’s fissures all over the place that are probably harder to fix than people think.”
You can see him speaking in the clip embedded here:
A lot of those errors have come from Robert Sanchez, who got a red card last week for a rash decision, but it’s not only him. This week it was Trevoh Chalobah who got the red, after being put in a horrible situation by Andrey Santos’ error.
The team is skittish, nervy and inexperienced. Who possibly could have predicted that the only Premier League team to not have named a 30 year old in their squad would turn out to be the team most in need of older, calmer heads?
