Chelsea have parted company with Liam Rosenior less than 24 hours after their Premier League defeat at Brighton. The club said in a statement that they had thanked him and his staff, cited results and performances below required standards, and appointed Calum McFarlane as interim until the end of the season.

McFarlane previously stepped in after Enzo Maresca’s January exit. He is set to lead the team against Leeds United in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium this weekend.

Rosenior had publicly criticised the players after the loss at the Amex Stadium, which left Chelsea seventh in the table. The Blues had lost five league games in a row for the first time in a century and had not scored in that run.

The former Hull City coach lasted just four months in charge despite signing a six-year deal.

Chelsea praised Rosenior’s integrity and professionalism following his mid-season appointment, and wished him well for the future. Under McFarlane, they are targeting European qualification and progress in the FA Cup, and will review the head coach role to make the right long-term appointment.
