Christian Eriksen signed off from Old Trafford last season by scoring the final goal in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa on the last day of the campaign.

The Danish midfielder had initially joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2022 on a Bosman move, following the expiry of his contract with Brentford.

Eriksen was a regular under former manager Erik ten Hag, but lost his place in the team following the arrival of Ruben Amorim. Nevertheless, the 33-year-old ended the campaign with five goals and six assists from 35 games across competitions for the Premier League giants.

With his contract expiring this summer, United decided against handing him a new deal, and Eriksen left the Theatre of Dreams as a free agent.

United yet to sign his replacement

United focused mainly on the attack this summer, adding Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to their roster. Senne Lammens was signed from Royal Antwerp to sort out the goalkeeper position.

The Red Devils were linked with multiple midfielders as well, including Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. While Amorim ended up signing neither this year, both players are expected to be on the agenda in 2026.

Meanwhile, Eriksen’s future was also the talk of the town over the summer and his initial struggles to find his next club were heavily scrutinised.

Ajax were named as an option late in the transfer window, but the Dane ended up joining Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg on September 10. The veteran midfielder has now opened up on the summer’s events.

Ajax was not an option

Christian Eriksen recently sat down with Tipsbladet to discuss his move to Wolfsburg. He revealed that a move to Ajax was never on the table, and he didn’t consider any other destination in the Netherlands.

“No, it was never on the table. They were never on the board that they wanted me in any way, so it wasn’t something that was up for discussion. For me, there is only one option in Holland, and that is Ajax. There is not much else,” said Eriksen.

When asked why it took so long to find his next destination, Eriksen responded: “The answer is that you have to find the right thing and find what suits your football career and your family. It all has to fit together, and then it has to take the time it takes.”

“Yes [said no to other opportunities], I have. But that is already in the past tense, so now it is full speed ahead for Wolfsburg.”

Eriksen registered eight goals and 19 assists from 107 games for United, winning the EFL Cup and the FA Cup.
