Venezuela finished eighth in qualifying and will miss this year’s World Cup. They collected 18 points with four wins, six draws and eight defeats, scoring 18 and conceding 28.

After his spell at Santos, Xavier will be reunited with midfielder Tomás Rincón, a regular call-up. Attacking midfielder Soteldo, since sold to Fluminense, spent two months under him at the club.

Xavier was appointed by Santos on 29 April last year and dismissed on 17 August after a 6-0 loss to Vasco at Morumbis in the 20th round of the Brasileirão. He oversaw 15 competitive matches, recording five wins, four draws and six defeats.

Born in Alegrete, Rio Grande do Sul, Cleber Márcio Serpa Xavier was Tite’s chief assistant for 24 years. He spent seven years with Brazil and went to the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, also serving at Grêmio, Internacional, Palmeiras, Atlético-MG, Corinthians and Flamengo. He had been without a club since leaving Santos.
