Flamengo’s bid for a fifth Libertadores title will begin in Cusco, where Conmebol has appointed Paraguayan Derlis Lopez to referee their opener.
According to Coluna Do Fla, Lopez will be assisted by Roberto Cañete and José Cuevas, with Mário Diaz de Vivar named fourth official. Fernando Lopez will lead the VAR team alongside Carlos Figueiredo.
The 37-year-old has overseen one Flamengo match, a 0-0 draw against LDU of Ecuador in Quito in the third round of the Copa Libertadores group stage.
Despite that routine outing, Lopez has a controversial past, receiving an eight-month Conmebol suspension in 2021 for a serious error. In Boca Juniors vs Atlético-MG at La Bombonera, he was the VAR who failed to award a legitimate goal to the hosts, with Andres Rojas the on-field referee.
Cusco face Flamengo on Wednesday eight April at 21:30 Brasília time at Estádio Garcilaso de la Vega, which sits 3,399 metres above sea level. Group A also includes Estudiantes de la Plata and Independiente Medellín, who meet the same day.
